Steps to create your own organic compost at home STEP 1 - Choose a Composting Container.- Select an earthen pot, plastic bucket, or drum with a lid (40-60 liters capacity) and drill holes for airflow. STEP 2 - Collect Kitchen Food Waste - Gather fruit and vegetable peels, tea bags, garden pruning, and leftover cooked food in a bucket. Avoid adding meat, oils, dairy, pet waste. STEP 3 - Layer the Compost- Add a layer of dry leaves, coco peat, shredded cardboard, wood chips/bark, sawdust, or eggshells.- Then, add the collected kitchen waste and EM solution(made by fermenting a mixture of 2parts curd, 1 part jaggery, and 10 parts water) to kickstart the decomposition process.- Continue layering until the bucket is % full. Place the bin in a well-ventilated area, preferably in the shade. STEP 4 - Aerate the Compost- Stir the waste weekly using a garden cultivator or similar tool to maintain airflow.- Continue layering until the bucket is full. Place the bin in al well-ventilated area, preferably in the shade. STEP 5 - Maintain the Compost - Add daily collected wet waste and follow with dry leaves, coco peat, or shredded cardboard.- If the mixture is too smelly or watery, add more dry leaves. If it's too dry, add more organic waste/ EM solution to rehydrate the compost and support microbial growth. STEP 6 - Harvest- Your Compost After 30-40 days, your organic homemade compost is ready to use! Remember to maintain the right balance of wet and dry materials and ensure adequate airflow for healthy composting. HAPPY COMPOSTING!Your compost is ready to harvest when it reaches a dark, crumbly texture and emits a rich, earthy aroma. This indicates that the composting process is complete, and the material has transformed into a nutrient-rich soil amendment, perfect for gardening and planting." Source : WASH Institute
